“A New Day in Wisconsin”

On Monday, February 19, 2024, Governor Evers signed new legislative maps into law that create the opportunity for Wisconsin voters to elect a more balanced state legislature in November.

Governor Evers promised when he was elected in 2018 to fight for fair maps that are representative of ALL Wisconsinites. A lot has happened since then.

On Monday, February 19, 2024, with pro-democracy leaders, fair maps activists and state legislators looking on, Gov. Evers signed fair maps - the maps he submitted to the Wisconsin Supreme Court last month - into law.

These maps will be in place for the 2024 elections and give Wisconsin voters a real shot at electing an accountable, representative, and balanced legislature for the first time since the extreme partisan gerrymander was imposed in 2011.

As the Governor stated at the press conference before the signing, "Folks, it's a new day in Wisconsin...few have been as consequential as this one."

The relentless activism of fair maps activists, pro-democracy organizations, and the Clarke v. Wisconsin Election Commission lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Wisconsin’s legislative maps has brought us to this day.

This is a victory for the people of Wisconsin.

But it’s not the end of the fair maps story.

WISCONSIN NEEDS A PERMANENT INDEPENDENT, NONPARTISAN REDISTRICTING PROCESS

In the run-up to November, our challenge is to educate voters about how their legislative voting districts have changed, and help them understand the opportunity the November election provides to elect a more accountable, representative and balanced state legislature.

After the November election, our job will be to inform voters about ‘best practices’ for an independent, nonpartisan redistricting process and help get legislation passed that will create an independent, nonpartisan redistricting process for Wisconsin.
